Retreat teachers, Stephen and Karl come from a background of formal Buddhist mindfulness training, but over many years of teaching we’ve adapted our approach so that it feels both grounded and accessible to a broad range of people, whether in workplaces, healthcare settings, or on residential retreats. On our residential retreats especially, we have time to engage more deeply and fully with meditation.
Our retreats are structured around silence and stillness, with sitting and walking meditation forming the core. At the same time, we encourage people to stay mindful through the whole day, not only in formal sessions. The daily rhythm begins at 6:45 a.m. and finishes at 9:00 p.m., with sitting and walking meditation periods balanced by generous breaks — a couple of hours after lunch and again after supper — so that the retreat feels steady and sustainable rather than overly intense.
In the first days, the group practices together more closely, with guided meditations and instruction to help people settle. This is especially supportive for those who are newer to meditation. As the days unfold, the emphasis shifts: participants are given more freedom to follow their own practice, and the group comes together mainly in the mornings and evenings. This balance allows people to develop their own authority in practice, rather than feeling led every step of the way.
We encourage participants at the beginning to engage in practices that calm the body and focus the mind, as when the body feels safe and relaxed, the mind naturally settles too. Once people have established that foundation, the retreat often deepens into a more open form of practice. At that stage, we invite them to let go of intentional techniques and simply listen inwardly — a way of being sometimes called spacious awareness. From here, the practice becomes about welcoming and holding space for whatever arises — thoughts, feelings, or body sensations — with kindness, curiosity, and care.
The attitude we encourage is one of loving-kindness and self-acceptance. Nothing within us is treated as an enemy or something to be eliminated. Instead, we hold the understanding that every part of our body-mind can be met in relationship, and transformation tends to emerge naturally from that meeting. In this way, people often find themselves moving into a more regulated state — calm, grounded, and present — and at the same time more open and available to their own inner life.
As the retreat matures, many participants discover a natural unfolding of their spiritual intuition — a sense of connecting with their own deepest values and recognition of the sacredness of life and its mysterious source. From this comes great blessings. We draw on the wisdom of the great traditions, all of which affirm that the heart’s essence is intrinsically pure. Our role is not to impose a path or technique but to walk alongside participants, practicing ourselves as part of the retreat, and trusting in the innate goodness and intelligence of human experience.
“Stephen and Karl’s teaching style is humourous, accepting, humble and ‘real’. There’s no dogma or major rules to follow which is a breath of fresh air. I had coaching sessions with both men, and their wisdom was helpful to me with what I had going on at that time. I would highly recommend this Retreat to you.” – Michelle Ryan
“The facilitators’ way of giving their guidance…was simple, direct without ego. They listened to their heart before speaking.” – Nicky Nikita
“I found Stephen and Karl to be authentic. Their reflections and gentle approach to mindfulness supported me in this retreat of noble silence.” – Kim Billington
